What watching movies taught me.
I grew up in the golden age of movies, the classic adventures like the goonies, a coming of age story where the protagonists pre teens/teens were forced out of their comfort zones, and arose to the impossible challenge and saved the day, but in the middle of that challenge when the night was most darkest, the speech was made. The speech of all speeches, when the protagonist finished by say saying “we CAN do this, because if WE don’t, WE lose everything.”
As I look back there are countless movies where everyday kids are thrust into this epic adventures, movies like; “The Sandlot” “The Goonies” “Hook” ”The never-ending story” “flight of the navigator” “the last starfighter” “the lost boys” Wild America” “Star Kid” “Warriors of virtue” there are countless movies in which a young pre teen or early teen is forced out of their comfort zones and learns to be a leader.
Here is my list of movie protagonists that I hold close to me, and if you know me you will see a pattern.
-Farris Bueller (Farris Buellers day off)
-Axel Foley (beverly hills cop franchise)
-Charlie Bartlett (anton yelchin in charlie bartlett)
-Adam ( blast from the past)
-Victor Joseph (Smoke Signals)
when I watch these movies, I don’t just see the characters I see myself playing those characters, my whole life I wanted to be as honorable as Adam from blast from the past, noble as Victor in smoke signals stand out like Farris, funny and memorable like Axel and Charlie. These men led me to the man I am today, because of movies like the ones above where, the protagonist is challenged and over comes that challenge that’s who I wanted to be.
As hard as it is to be set apart, looking forward I see more of my fellow men stepping up, becoming that change that needs to happen, and honestly I think back to when I watched those movies when I was a kid, and it helps to remember that although I was a kid and watching these movies for entertainment, these movies shaped who I am.
so remember as you go on your day today, to not take life to seriously remember to laugh, laugh like Chunk from “the Goonies when he was tide up in that chair super uncomfortable and going with the flow. because he had it hard and was in an uncomfortable position and and still laughed it off. that’s what I do when I am in over my head, I just laugh because why not.
