Trusting a broken system
It’s been a really hard year, and trusting this system is getting harder for me, I truly just want to help people, but when it takes 3 years to start making progress it gets more and more difficult to add more and more of that weight to the shoulders, and the this is a warning, to all those who know me, this blog is a little bit cynical. my apologies.
So here’s the deal, I am an indigenous person, I applied for funding for school through my band office and they said that I was to early, and would have to apply later, soo I applied later, when I heard back from them after following their instructions it was to late, so naturally I applied for student loans, then after starting my professional counselling business there was more road blocks, not only am I not allowed to get funding from my band office, but I am not allowed to help my people because I do not have a masters degree.
You would think as an indigenous person who has had the training to help others, by joining ACCT (Association of Cooperative Counselling Therapies of Canada) doing the time to become a RTC (Registered Therapeutic Counsellor) would be sufficient enough, and by doing all those things above there is a standard that counsellors must adhere to, and that is you need 200 hrs of DCC (Direct Client Contact) you need 50 hrs of Supervision, which I have done both, I can help my people and yet I am not aloud to.
I have questions with the current system, I get that there are standards that we need to adhere to, as a mental health professional and an indigenous man it is very troubling to have to turn away people who have broken cycles that they continually are stuck in, this might just be the cynical me thinking out loud but I have trouble trusting this First Nations Health Authority.
inconclusion I just want to say thank you to all the individuals who have helped me along the way and believing in the work that I do, I normally try to stay positive and have a positive spin on what is happening but this topic just is a tough one for me, thank you all for your time have a wonderful day.
